“We were just kissing,” I huffed. “What did you think we were gonna do? Provide entertainment for the whole neighborhood?”

“I don’t know where you’re getting this attitude from, young lady If you want to keep seeing that boy, some ground rules will have to be set and followed. Do you understand?”

“Yes, ma’am,” I said, trying to hold my tongue. Then I decided to go ahead and tell her what I thought. “Mom, I love Branson. And no matter how hard I try to fight it, those weird feelings just keep coming up. I’m sorry you witnessed what you did, but if you want to be my friend as well as my mom, there are some things you need to know about what’s going on between us.”

“I got an eyeful of what’s going on between you two. What I want to know is what you’re going to do about it.”

“I’ve been praying about it, for one,” I said in my defense.

She sat next to me at the kitchen table. “That’s good for starters.”

“And for most of our date we were at the Waffle House.”

“Well, it’s good that you weren’t alone.”

“Then, when we got into the car, we didn’t do anything until we got home.”

Mom took a deep breath and stared at her hands. “Laurel, you can’t fix a relationship with physical activity. The bond has got to be Christ. I know Branson is a member of our church, but I don’t see him there regularly.” She looked at me, and I knew she was telling me these things because she cared about me, not just because she wanted to give me a lecture. “Why don’t you invite him to the church youth retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains? They’re having a workshop about this kind of thing. Maybe the two of you can take it together.”

“Maybe,” I said, although I wasn’t sure Branson would be really excited about it.
